South Sea Pearls and What to Look For When Shopping

By: Eric @ Anandia

In this post, we continue our previous discussion on South Sea Pearls, and knowing what to look for when shopping for them.

South Sea Pearl Pendant

South Sea Pearls are the largest pearls available, and are among the most valuable!  They come in two main varieties: White and Golden. The difference in color has to do with the species of oyster that produces a pearl. For example, the Tahitian oyster produces black pearls, while the Australian oyster produces large white or silver ones. Golden pearls come mostly from Indonesia and the Philippines.

White South Sea Pearls truly are the giants! Sizes can get as large as 18mm, sometimes larger! But perhaps the most valuable pearls in the world are natural-color Golden South Sea Pearls.

Most people have never even heard of Golden pearls, let alone held one up close (if you’re new to golden pearls, please come by our offices and see them for yourself!)

Because of their size and distinctive look, it is hard to confuse south sea pearls with anything else.

Golden Pearl Earrings

However, as Freshwater pearls have increased in size and quality, freshwater pearls may appear in the same size range, especially in off-round shapes. So make certain to confirm with the seller, because there is a huge difference in price between south sea pearls and the much cheaper freshwater ones.

What to Expect

  • Sizes range from 10mm to 18mm+, and occasionally get even bigger!
  • Natural colors are white, silver, or golden. For golden pearls, it’s extremely important to ask whether the color is natural. Color treated pearls abound, and are worth much less than natural-color golden pearls. Dyed colors may fade over time!
  • Baroque shapes in White South Sea pearls are very popular, in addition to the classic round.
