As regards shape, I’m often asked about the different shapes pearls come in, and which is the most valuable.
While a round pearl is commonly thought to represent pearl perfection, the truth is that there are several “perfect” shapes. Round is only one ideal, but in fact relatively few pearls are actually round. This is part of the reason why (all else being equal) round pearls tend to be the most expensive. But other shapes are treasured too.
In fact, pearls come in a variety of other shapes: near-round, button pearl, oval, baroque pearls, semi-baroque, drop pearl, and circle. Of these, the most in demand are nice drop-shapes (think of a “tear-drop” – small at the top, getting gradually bigger towards the rounded bottom) and baroques.
Baroque pearls are more free-form, moving from a drop-shape to really unusual, asymmetrical shapes. They are the most “organic” looking of the shape types. These pearls have a charm of their own and are appreciated for their unique character – their inimitable shape, after all, was created entirely by nature and will never be repeated.

Any of these shapes may have “circles” – raised ridges going around the pearl. Again, more choice for pearl lovers!
